Understanding Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Childhood and teenage years bring unique mental health challenges: school refusal, exam pressure, screen addiction, behavioural outbursts, developmental delay and adolescent depression. Early, sensitive intervention prevents these from shaping the rest of a young person's life.

Adolescents talk more freely when a part of the consultation happens without parents in the room. That is standard practice here, and what is safe to share with parents is discussed with the young person first.

Signs that are worth taking seriously

  • School refusal or falling grades
  • Frequent anger outbursts or aggression
  • Excessive screen or mobile use
  • Speech or developmental delay
  • Poor social interaction
  • Exam anxiety and panic
  • Self-harm or withdrawn behaviour
  • Bedwetting or persistent fears

When it is time to see a psychiatrist

Not every low patch needs a doctor. These are the points at which a clinical opinion genuinely helps rather than waiting longer:

  • Refusing school, or a sharp unexplained drop in grades
  • Anger outbursts, aggression or self-harm
  • Delayed speech, poor eye contact or no social interest in a young child
  • Withdrawal, secrecy or major change in sleep and appetite in a teenager
If someone is in immediate danger. Do not wait for an appointment. Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 — free, 24×7 — or take the person to the nearest hospital emergency department. More helplines.

How this is treated at the chamber

Every young patient receives a developmental history, a child-friendly assessment, parental guidance and behaviour management training, school liaison advice, therapy for anxiety and mood problems, and medication only when clearly necessary and at carefully chosen doses.

What happens at the first visit

A full history, unhurried

What has been happening, for how long, and how it is affecting sleep, work, studies and family. Relatives can join if you want them to.

Examination and tests where needed

Thyroid, vitamin B12, sugar and other basic investigations are ordered when they could be contributing. Physical causes are ruled out before anything else.

The diagnosis, explained plainly

You are told what the condition is, what it is not, and why. No jargon and no vague reassurance.

A plan you have agreed to

Medication where it is needed, at the lowest dose that will work, plus counselling and follow-up dates. Cost is discussed openly.

Questions patients ask about child & adolescent psychiatry

Developmental and behavioural assessment can begin as early as 2–3 years when concerns arise.

Medication is used only when clearly indicated. Behavioural and parental approaches are always tried first.

Yes, with age-appropriate confidentiality that keeps parents suitably informed about safety matters.

From toddler age onwards. Developmental concerns such as delayed speech or suspected autism are better assessed early — waiting to see if the child 'grows out of it' loses the years when intervention works best.
Please note. This page is general information, not a prescription. Psychiatric medication must never be started, changed or stopped based on a website. Please do not self-medicate or use someone else's prescription.
